The term group home has historically been a wide-ranging and continuously changing one over the past few decades. Initially, group homes were assisted living programs for mentally or physically disabled people from all over the US., including those living in the Pacific Palisades, CA area.

As its title suggests, group homes look and function much more like a teenager’s home than a lock-down facility like one would experience at a traditional residential treatment center.

Thanks to its home-like atmosphere and environment, group homes are designed to function like that a regular family and household. However, this close-knit environment works on a few different kinds of levels. 

First, teens are given the practical opportunity to learn how to proactively and healthily function in a family unit, which is an invaluable skill set for when they are ready to return to their natural homes in real life. Second, the relatively small number of staff and other students provide teens from Pacific Palisades, CA to engage in intensive therapy more one-on-one.

This more intimate relational transaction between staff and students allows the teens more opportunities to work on their issues and grow from them. It also allows them to build stronger bonds and trust between themselves, the staff, and their peers, which is invaluable when about therapeutic and behavioral growth within the home.
